What Is Lumecca Intense Pulse Light Therapy?

Lumecca IPL is the world’s most advanced non-surgical, light-based skin resurfacing system that is optimized to achieve great results in a single session. When compared to traditional IPL systems in clinical trials, Lumecca IPL achieves the fastest clearance of skin blemishes and surface-level discoloration; brighter skin within 1 to 2 sessions versus 4 to 5 sessions normally required to see real results with other light-based treatments.

Lumecca is a cutting-edge intense pulsed light device by InMode, which can reduce the appearance of pigmented and vascular lesions and significantly improve skin tone. Lumecca uses selective photothermolysis, a light therapy that uses specific wavelengths to target pigmented areas and break down discoloration. Because the light therapy is so precise, healthy surrounding tissue is not affected or damaged during the process. Lumecca provides a photofacial through the delivery of a comfortable light treatment.

How Does Lumecca Work?

During treatment, a beam of light is directed to the treatment area. Patients typically report no discomfort during the treatment. After the treatment, the skin will feel warm and appear reddish for 30-60 minutes, after which the skin returns to normal.

After the treatment, the pigmented spots will appear darker temporarily. Within about a week or two, the dark spots will start to fade, revealing a more even complexion. If superficial blood vessels are being treated, they will typically begin to disappear over the course of a couple weeks.

To increase the success of the Lumecca treatment, sunlight should be avoided before and immediately after treatment; sun protection should be used to maintain results.

Depending on the extent and condition of the treatment area, multiple sessions may be recommended. The number of treatments will also vary depending on what is being addressed.

What Are The Benefits?

Whether your skin is uneven due to sun damage or superficial veins, Lumecca can improve its appearance in just 1-3 sessions. This safe and effective treatment can improve the appearance of:

  • Age spots (red/brown pigmentations)
  • Vascular lesions such as facial telangiectasias (spider veins) and poikiloderma
  • Rosacea (redness)
  • Sun damage
  • Freckles
  • A variety of other visible skin blemishes on the face, neck, upper chest and hands
  • Overall skin texture

Lumecca can be used on a range of skin tones and all areas of the body such as on the face, décolletage, legs, and hands.

Why Sets Lumecca Apart?

The technology in Lumecca uses a higher peak power in order to deliver a stronger result, which leads to fewer treatments than other IPL machines on the market.

Lumecca is a breakthrough intense pulsed light that delivers up to 3X more energy in the 500-600 nm range to improve efficacy for vascular and pigmented lesions. It is optimized for clinicians to treat a variety of skin types and conditions with just a single session.

Which Areas Can Be Treated with IPL?

Lumecca IPL can be used on all areas of the body. The most common areas of treatment are zones that are regularly exposed to the sun. This often includes the face, neck, décolletage, legs, hands and arms.

What Do I Do Before Treatment?

Avoid direct, excessive sun exposure or tanning one month prior to treatment.

What Can I Expect During Treatment?

During the treatment session, you will be awake and resting comfortably. A cooling gel will be applied upon request.

Undergoing intense pulsed light therapy is a relatively straightforward experience, where the treatment area is first cleaned and prepped. A small handheld wand that emits high-energy light pulses over your skin. The treatment wand features a sapphire tip that provides cooling and is designed to better access delicate crevices such as around your nose. The sapphire tip is migrated methodically along the skin to target your blemishes.

Patients report the experience to feel like a rubber band being flicked onto the skin and is well-tolerated by most patients. The duration of a treatment can range from a half hour or longer depending on the size of the area being treated

At a glance, Lumecca IPL treatment experiences mean:

  • No anesthesia required
  • About 30 minutes per session
  • Little to no discomfort
  • Large areas may be treated quickly
  • Little to no downtime after treatment

What Should I Expect After Treatment?

Redness and a slight warming of the skin are normal after treatment and usually subsides within an hour. Over the next 24 to 48 hours, you may see a darkening of pigmented spots. In the week afterwards the pigmented lesions flake off, leading to an evening out of skin tone. After treating vascular lesions you may see the vein blanch and disappear or a color change in the vessel which dissipates after a few days.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

An improved skin appearance can be noted after the first session. Multiple sessions provide even better results. Treatment regime depends on the severity of skin damage, skin type, type of treatment (vascular vs sun damage) and energy settings.

What Does The Recovery From IPL Treatment Involve?

Recovery time from a session of intense pulsed light therapy is almost nonexistent. The pulses of light do most of their work close to the surface of the skin, so the most common effect after a treatment is slight redness of the treated area. Redness may linger about an hour after treatment, but will soon resolve

It is common for patients to also experience some skin sensitivity, but this should fade quickly, often in a matter of hours. We recommend that patients avoid direct sunlight exposure for at least two weeks after each session and to liberally use sunscreen to protect the skin.

Many patients experience dramatic improvement and total clearance of the skin issue they want to be treated through IPL, but in some cases, a course of multiple sessions may be recommended.

How Quickly Will I See Results?

Sun damage and skin complexion results can be seen a few days after the first session. The skin will continue to look younger and more brilliant over time with most visible results after 1-2 weeks. Having multiple photofacial sessions will improve the final result.

The tone of red spots and brown spots on the skin may darken immediately after treatment and redden over the next 24 hours. After 7 to 10 days, treated skin blemishes will peel or fade away, leaving behind a consistent skin tone and complexion.

Future age spots, freckles, and blemishes are always possible as a result of sun damage and aging, but it is also always possible to easily treat new blemishes.

For vascular treatments such as facial telangiectasias, results can be seen in up to 2 weeks. Broken capillaries, rosacea or other recurring conditions are not curable through light treatments but can be managed and reduced.

In our experience, a series of four treatments spaced a few weeks apart provides the best, most consistent results.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Most patients do not experience any side effects and any skin reaction usually resolves within a few hours. Patients may find they are sensitive to sunlight immediately after treatment. It is recommended to avoid direct sunlight and tanning.
