Article Summary:

Botox and dermal fillers are two popular anti-aging injectables. While both can be used to smooth wrinkles, their active ingredients, applications, and how they work differ completely:

  • Botox works by causing temporary muscle paralysis
  • Dermal fillers add volume to the injection site

When it comes to Botox vs. fillers, knowing which one is right for you depends on your treatment area and beauty goals. This blog breaks down what Botox is and how it works so you can make an informed decision. See Part 2 for how dermal fillers work.

For many patients, choosing between anti-aging treatments is often a question of Botox vs. fillers. Both are injectable treatments that are performed quickly and safely. Both can produce desired results with just one visit. So how do you know which one is right for you?

We believe patient education is key to patient satisfaction. In this two-part series, we’ll break down what Botox and dermal fillers are, how they work, and what areas they’re often used to treat. We’ll explain the type of results each treatment provides, so you can feel confident your chosen service will help you meet your beauty goals.

Botox Vs Fillers Part 1: All About Botox

Botox is a popular anti-aging treatment made from the naturally occurring botulinum toxin. It can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for up to six months after injection.

How Does Botox Work?

Many of the wrinkles and fine lines on our necks and faces are the result of overactive muscles. Botox works by temporarily paralyzing muscles, so the skin can lie smooth and flat. In more technical terms, Botox is a neuromodulator, meaning it affects how the nervous system sends signals. When a licensed practitioner injects Botox into a muscle, the nerves in that muscle temporarily lose the ability to send signals that make the muscle fibers contract. This is not a permanent paralysis, and most muscles regain function 3-4 months after injection, although some results last longer.

The Different Types of Botox Injectables

“Botox” has become the catch-all name for injections that use the botulinum toxin active ingredient, but there are actually seven different FDA-approved products, each with its own formulation and application. At Magnolia Medical Aesthetics, we carry the following products:

  • Botox: This is the original botulinum toxin injectable and the most widely studied and commercially available. Unlike other formulations, it contains accessory proteins that help prevent the spread of the injections through the muscle. This makes Botox ideal for precise treatment areas like crow’s feet and glabellar lines.
  • Dysport: This formula has smaller molecules than Botox and doesn’t contain the accessory proteins. Because this formula will diffuse more easily through muscle, it’s ideal for large application areas like the forehead. It is also more diluted than Botox and requires a higher dosage.
  • Xeomin: This is sometimes called “naked Botox” because it undergoes extra filtration and has fewer additives than Botox and Dysport. The purity of this formulation makes it ideal for patients with allergies or who have built up a tolerance to Botox injections.

Your provider will help you understand the unique benefits of each formula and help you choose the injectable neuromodulator that works best for you.

What Areas Does Botox Treat?

Botox has clinical benefits and can be used to treat excessive sweating, chronic migraines, lazy eye, and even bladder dysfunction. However, most people comparing Botox vs. dermal fillers are interested in its anti-aging and cosmetic applications.

Botox is commonly used to treat wrinkles in the following areas:

  • Forehead
  • Crow’s feet
  • Under eye
  • Neck and décolletage
  • Glabellar area (also called frown lines or “elevens”)
  • Marionette lines (wrinkles that run from the side of your mouth to your jaw)

It can also be used to contour the face and lips:

  • Botox brow lifts relax the muscles around the eyebrow to reduce droopiness
  • Non-surgical nose jobs release the muscles that pull the nose down, to “lift” the face
  • Defined Jaw Lines can be achieved with Botox injections along the jawbone
  • Lip Flip procedures roll the top lip up slightly, making it appear more voluminous.

What Results Can You Get From Botox?

Botox is a trusted and well-studied solution for wrinkle reduction and non-surgical contouring. The results are impactful, but temporary, with most patients experiencing effects that last 3-4 months. It is quick, safe, minimally painful, and often more affordable than other anti-aging procedures. If you want to smooth dynamic wrinkles and lift areas of the face, it may be the solution for you.

Botox Vs Dermal Fillers: How Do I Know If Botox Is Right For Me?

If you have questions about the appropriateness of Botox for your beauty goals, the best course of action is to speak to a licensed medical doctor. At Magnolia Medical Aesthetics, our injections are always performed by a doctor with advanced anatomical knowledge, so you can trust that the procedure is safe and the results are effective and nuanced.
